Summer Movie Release Dates

Some release dates of Summer 2008 theatrical movies (and whether or not I want to see them in the theatre).

  • Iron Man, May 2 (I have no desire to see this movie - how about you?)
  • Made of Honor, May 2 (for Patrick Dempsey, I'll probably get this one on NetFlix, since I'm saving up my ticket money for May 22nd's Return of Indy!)
  • What Happens In Vegas, May 9 (another one that I have no desire to see - how about you?)
  • Speed Racer, May 9 (and yet another one that I have no desire to see)
  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, May 22 (yes, I think this is one that screams "see me on the big screen!")
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, May 16 (yes, I was delightfully surprised by the adaptation of the first book, and look forward to seeing this one)
  • Sex & The City, May 30 (okay, I know I'm the last fag who's never seen an episode of Sex & The City, sue me. In other words: no desire to see this one)
  • Kung Fu Panda, June 6 (this one sounds stupid to me, but is predicted to be the animated smash of the summer... I'll wait for it to come to HBO)
  • The Incredible Hulk, June 13 (did we really need another Hulk movie, so soon after the last one tanked? You couldn't pay me to go see this one...)
  • The Happening, June 13 (M. Night Shamalamadingdong's new movie... let's just hope it's morre like Signs than Lady in the Water...)
  • Get Smart, June 20 (I'd rather get the old series on NetFlix than have to watch this one...)
  • The Love Guru, June 20 (as much as I enjoyed the Austin Powers movies, the previews for this one just seem offensive and un-funny... what do you think?)
  • Wall-E, June 27 (the Pixar smash of the year, about a lonely robot... I'll wait for the reviews to see if this is a theatre-must-see or a wait-til-NetFlix one for me)
  • Hancock, July 2 (I know that the combination of Will Smith + July 4th weekend will be box office gold, but frankly it doesn't make me want to leave the BBQ)
  • Journey to the Center of the Earth: 3D, July 11 (I have no 3D theatres near me. But I'd watch Brendan Fraser shred toilet paper!)
  • Hellboy II: The Golden Army, July 11 (two words: HELL NO!)
  • The Dark Knight, July 18 (I think the first of the Christian Bale Batman movies was one of my top-ten favorite movies of all-time, so yes, I want to see this one in the theatre - especially since it's Heath Ledger's last full role)
  • Mamma Mia, July 18 (Mamma Mia, how can I resist this one?!?! Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and the fabulous Christine Baranski in the big screen adaptation of the smash musical - I am so there!)
  • The X-Files: I Want To Believe, July 25 (I want to believe this will be a great movie, and I'm willing to go see it opening night with the millions of other x-nerds who miss their weekly fix of Mulder & Scully)
  • Step Brothers, July 25 (I'd rather watch The Incredible Hulk a million times over than have to endure Will Ferrell acting stupid in another stupid movie)
  • The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, August 1 (Brendan Fraser returns in a franchise I love, need I say more?)
  • Pineapple Express, August 8 (do we really need another stoner movie?)
  • Tropic Thunder, August 15 (as much as I enjoyed Zoolander, I discovered the joy of that one on DVD, so I think it's NetFlix queue for this one!)
  • Hamlet 2, August 22 (a sequel to Hamlet, as a musical, with the Tucson Gay Men's Chorus... okay, I'll admit - this one intrigues me. Anyone else want to see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern sing a love song to each other?)

Coming Soon

The Season 2 premiere of BBC America's Robin Hood is Saturday, April 26th at 9pm.

Next Sunday, the 16th, is the first episode of the new critically acclaimed John Adams miniseries at 8pm on HBO.

But the frakkin' Season Premiere I cannot wait for is the Final Season of Battlestar Galactica (Friday, April 4th at 10pm on the Sci-Fi Channel). My guess is that the entire cast of characters is revealed to by Cylons who have been infiltrating the chemotherapy induced hallucinations of Education Secretary Roslyn back on New Caprica, meaning the last four years have all been a dream...
